Frequently Asked Questions

For DC, Watts = Volts x Amps. For AC single phase, Watts = Volts x Amps x Power Factor. For AC three phase, Watts = sqrt(3) x Volts x Amps x Power Factor (line-to-line) or 3 x Volts x Amps x Power Factor (line-to-neutral).

In AC circuits, voltage and current are not always perfectly in phase. The power factor (0 to 1) accounts for that difference between real power and apparent power. For purely resistive loads it is usually close to 1.
